Biography
Indianapolis greeted Frederick Burton on 20 October 1871, and from that Midwestern starting block he sprinted into a career that flickered to life on silent screens and kept glowing through the birth of sound. Audiences first noticed him as the steely heart of The Fighting Blade (1923), later felt the dust of The Big Trail (1930) settle in their lungs, and earlier still caught his restless swagger in Arizona (1918). Off-camera, he pledged his life twice—first to Lora Osgood, then to Jessie Perine Lawrie—before the final curtain fell on 23 October 1957 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, a long way from Indiana but still inside the glow of the spotlight he never really left.
