Biography

A Lancashire Valentine’s baby—24 February 1878—George Cowl first drew breath within earshot of Blackpool’s crashing surf. He traded the salt air for greasepaint, steering himself behind and before the camera: in 1917 he unfurled Betsy Ross, stitched history onto the screen, then stepped into the eerie chambers of The Mystery of the Yellow Room two years later. By 1930 he was coaxing syncopated dreams from The Jazz Cinderella, cementing a résumé that glimmers across the silent-to-sound divide. Death caught up with him, finally, on 4 April 1942, under the perpetual sunshine of Los Angeles, far from the Lancashire coast.
