Biography
A soot-smelling forge town, Spennymoor, coughed him into the world on 4 January 1877: Gibson Gowland, miner's son, future face of silent fury. By 1919 he had crossed the Atlantic and traded Durham coal-dust for California sunlight, stamping Erich von Stroheim’s *Blind Husbands* with a scowl audiences couldn’t forget. Five years later he surrendered himself completely to McTeague, plumbing greed and obsession in von Stroheim’s nine-hour colossus—*Greed*—a performance still scraped onto film-study syllabi like gold leaf on a broken tooth. Between these landmarks he slipped through the Parisian shadows of *The Red Lily* (1924), another canvas for that granite profile. Off-screen, two women shared his life in turn: pianist-actress Rachelle Marie Gertrude Dervaes and, later, Sylvia Andrew. The curtain fell on 9 September 1951 in London, the same island he had once fled, now the quiet stage for his final exit.
