Biography

On a spring day in Savannah—May 23, 1868—Hardee Kirkland entered the world, unaware he would one day corral light and shadow for the silver sheet. He cut his teeth behind the lens and in front of it, steering the 1912 horse-opera *Friends in San Rosario*, marshaling Victor Hugo’s rebels in the 1917 epic *Les Misérables*, and unleashing the fever dream of Paris after dark in 1923’s *While Paris Sleeps*. Sixty winters later, on February 18, 1929, the cameras finally stopped rolling for him in sun-baked Los Angeles, California.
