Biography
Howard Gaye entered the world on 23 May 1878 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and spent the next seven decades turning that quiet English birthplace into a footnote for a life lived on film sets across the Atlantic. Between 1915 and 1918 he slipped into history three times: first as the Confederate martyr in *The Birth of a Nation*, then as the tempestuous poet of *Intolerance*, and finally as the crusading hero of *Restitution*. Off-camera he directed, married Idaho-born actress Ida Montana Marguerite Stallman, later wed Julia Henrietta Battrick Reunert, and eventually sailed home, dying in Willesden, London, on 26 December 1955.
