Biography

On the final day of January 1860, amid the echoing bells of Rome, Ida Carloni drew her first breath in the papal capital that would one day become Lazio’s heart. The stage soon claimed her: under the spotlights of Europe’s silent-film dawn she blossomed into Ida Carloni Talli, the regal matriarch of the screen. Audiences remember her as the fragile, doomed Marguerite in 1915’s Camille, the tormented mother of 1922’s I promessi sposi, and the steadfast nun of The White Sister a year later. Half a century after her Roman debut, she closed her eyes for the last time on 23 April 1940 in Milan, leaving Lombardy—and cinema—a shade quieter.
