Biography
Joseph G Davis entered the world on 21 December 1873 in Sunderland, Tyne‑and‑Wear, England, the son of Alfred and Janet Davis (née Gunnis), both steeped in theatre. In the early 1900s he crossed the Atlantic aboard the SS New York, which departed Southampton on 2 January 1904 and reached New York on 10 January. The ship carried the 30‑year‑old actor and his 27‑year‑old wife, actress Mary Isabel Davis. He was often billed as James G Davis or J Gunnis‑Davis. His wife, formerly Mary Denton‑Cardew and Mary Andrews, had been married twice before; her birth name was Mary Isabel Michael. Together they had a son, James Irving John Gunnis‑Davis, born 7 June 1906 in New York, who later adopted the stage name Jack G Davis. J Gunnis‑Davis passed away on 23 March 1937 in Los Angeles, California, and was laid to rest in Hollywood Memorial Cemetery.
