Biography
Born within earshot of London’s Bow bells on 3 July 1841, Karl Formes traded the fog of the Thames for the klieg lights of Hollywood. Over seven decades he moved from Victorian stages to flickering silent screens, gifting audiences a gaunt, magnetic presence in Ghosts (1915), the time-warping comedy A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1921), and the student-romance tragedy Old Heidelberg (1915). He died quietly in Los Angeles on 18 November 1939, aged 98, having watched the art of acting reinvent itself from gas footlights to talking shadows.
