Biography

Between 1908 and 1925, Maude Turner Gordon lit up Broadway in a parade of shows that kept her name in lights: she warbled through Glorious Betsy, hoofed in The American Maid, shuffled a full deck in A Full House alongside Hugh Cameron and Ralph Morgan, traded quips with Al Jolson, Minnie Dupree and Colin Campbell in Elsie, then clowned through Big Boy. She later shared the footlights with Marilyn Miller in the juggernaut hit Sally. Ever the entrepreneur, Maude mounted Mrs. Holmes, Detective under her own banner, starring as the sleuth herself. Off-stage, she cheered daughter Dorothy across the graduation lawn of Virginia’s Fauquier Institute; Dorothy soon swapped cap for veil, marrying U.S. Navy Lieutenant Robert A. White. Pneumonia wrote the final curtain for Maude, but the applause still echoes.
