Biography
Chicago greeted Mollie McConnell on 24 September 1865, and by her mid-fifties she had slipped effortlessly onto silent screens, trading prairie winds for klieg lights. Between 1917 and 1921 she anchored three now-classic melodramas—The Neglected Wife, Bare Fists, and Hearts and Masks—each role layering grit and grace onto the flickering celluloid of the era. Off-camera she twice walked the aisle: first with William A. McConnell, later with director Sherwood MacDonald. The final curtain fell in Los Angeles on 9 December 1920, closing a life that had spanned the gas-lamp Midwest to the newborn glamour of Hollywood.
