Biography
Born beneath the salt-sprayed eaves of Machias, Maine, on 4 August 1870, Nellie Parker Spaulding traded the crash of Atlantic waves for the flicker of silver-screen arc lights. Between 1918 and 1923 she stepped before the camera three times—first as a Gilded-Age socialite in The House of Mirth, then chasing ambition in Her Great Chance, and finally counting the stakes of adulthood in Twenty-One—each role sealing her fleeting but indelible silhouette into early cinema. Off-screen she shared her name with Herbert Spaulding, the husband who stood beside her through reels and revolutions alike. Her final curtain fell on 18 June 1945 in Glendale, California, where the Pacific sunset replaced the klieg lights she once called home.
