Biography
London welcomed Nora Cecil on 26 September 1878, and from that first breath she seemed destined to trade the city’s fog for the flicker of silver screens. By the mid-1920s she had slipped across the Atlantic, bringing a razor-sharp comic timing that directors soon exploited. Silent chills crept through her performance in *Midnight Faces* (1926), but it was her brisk, scene-stealing turns in *Seven Days Leave* (1930) and King Vidor’s landmark *Street Scene* (1931) that cemented her reputation as Hollywood’s favorite brisk aunt or formidable landlady. Four decades after leaving England, she closed the curtain for good in Los Angeles on 1 May 1951, leaving behind a reel of characters still quickening pulses in revival houses today.
