Biography
A St. Petersburg winter greeted Osip Runich in 1889, and the footlights soon beckoned. By 1921 he had traded the imperial frost for German soundstages, letting the wild eyes of Die Bestie im Menschen and the revolutionary fire of Danton flicker across silent screens. Three years later he strode onto another set as the Cossack hero of Taras Bulba, saber flashing in flickering monochrome. Fate’s final reel unspooled far from home: on 6 April 1947 the curtain fell in sun-baked Johannesburg, South Africa.
