Biography
A crisp autumn day in Paris—9 September 1877—welcomed Paul Capellani into the world, and the city’s lights never quite let him go. Before the century turned, he was already stepping before the camera, lending his face and pen to the newborn art of cinema. Audiences first crowded the darkness to watch him in Mysteries of Paris (1912), followed by the fragile romance of Camille (1915) and the bohemian ache of La vie de Bohème (1916). More than four decades later, on 7 November 1960, he took his final bow on the sun-drenched coast of Cagnes-sur-Mer, leaving the screen a little dimmer without him.
