Biography

A Bavarian boy born in 1872, Paul Panzer traded provincial streets for grease-paint and gaslight, sharpening his craft on German and American boards long before celluloid beckoned. In 1905 he stepped before Edison’s crude camera; two years later he defected to Vitagraph, becoming one of that newborn studio’s first contract faces. Restlessness struck again in 1911, and Panzer swapped performing for the director’s chair just long enough to helm Monopol’s one-reel curiosity The Life of Buffalo Bill (1912), starring the showman himself, William F. Cody. The experiment proved fleeting: Panzer slipped back into character roles, racking up 350-plus screen appearances—many so fleeting the credits forgot his name—over the next four decades. His final curtain fell in 1952; six years later the perpetual wanderer died quietly in Hollywood, a silver-screen ghost who had outlasted every studio he ever served.
