Biography
Born on a summer afternoon in 1899, Viola Savoy first drew breath in the brownstone-lined bustle of Brooklyn, New York. Barely sixteen, she stepped in front of the camera to lead the 1915 silent fantasia Alice in Wonderland, giving Lewis Carroll’s dream-child a face that flickered to life in darkened nickelodeons. That same whirlwind year she slipped into the melodrama The Spendthrift, proving her range before audiences had learned her name. Seventy-two winters later, the curtain quietly closed; she died in February 1987, leaving only the bright, fleeting shadows of her two surviving films to speak for her.
