Biography
Seventeen-seventy-six gave the United States a Declaration; 1876 gave it Gouverneur Morris. The novelist-playwright arrived in Manhattan on 7 February, spun darkly romantic tales for the silent screen—The Penalty’s legless crime-lord, The Ace of Hearts’ bomb-throwing anarchists, That Model from Paris’ couture chaos—and collected two wives, Ruth Wightman first, then Elise Waterbury. His last chapter closed in the desert light of Gallup, New Mexico, 14 August 1953.
