Biography
Born in Rio de Janeiro on 12 September 1893, Luiz de Barros spent almost nine decades in the city that shaped his vision of cinema. He first stepped behind the camera in 1916 with Vivo ou Morto, a silent that already hinted at his gift for taut storytelling. Seven years later he conjured the swashbuckling fantasy Cavaleiro Negro, and by 1931 he captured the nation’s imagination again with the patriotic epic Alvorada da Glória, cementing his reputation as a pioneering director and meticulous editor. Off-screen, he shared his life with Gita de Barros, his lifelong partner and collaborator. When the final reel rolled in 1982, Rio reclaimed the man who had done so much to put its stories on film.
