Biography
A child of 1874 San Francisco, William H. Clifford grew up sketching stories on fog-cooled street-corners and by his mid-twenties had swapped pencil stubs for production slates. Between 1919 and 1924 he conjured three silent-era standouts—*The Pen Vulture*, *Souls in Bondage*, and *Missing Daughters*—serving alternately as scribe and shot-caller behind the camera. Off-set, he shared life’s reels with actress Mary Holly; together they moved from Bay breezes to L.A. palm-shadows, where Clifford’s final curtain fell on 9 October 1938.
