Peter Wald is a famous Black music-hall dancer making his debut in Madrid. His real name is Pedro Valdés, and before becoming famous, he worked as a servant in the house of the Marquises of Arencibia, from which he fled to escape the racist treatment he suffered at the hands of one of the family members. When Peter meets Emma at the theater where he performs, he offers her the opportunity to become his dance partner. Peter is in love with her and declares his love, but Emma rejects him, feeling a mixture of misgiving and physical revulsion because of his Black skin.
