A little girl is kidnapped by the Mafia in revenge for her father's help in capturing one of the mobsters. She is presumed dead, but in reality is spirited away to Italy, where she is raised as the daughter of a kindly couple. When she is betrothed to the cruel padrone, she disguises herself as a boy and stows away to America, where she finds herself once again in the clutches of the mobster who originally kidnapped her. But this time luck and her own pluck are with her, and the tables are soon turned.

While in New York seeking work, Cynthia, a young English girl, meets Bruce Crittenden and George Rhode who introduce her to Madame Savarin, a wealthy woman seeking a companion for a sea voyage. She hires Cynthia, and while at sea, Cynthia discovers that Bruce is the ship's purser. Cynthia's father was a famous wireless expert who taught her how to read code, which enables her to overhear a plot to sink the ship and steal Mrs. Savarin's jewels. Soon after, the crew mutinies, and while Rhode and Bruce fight the crew, Cynthia sounds the alarm. As he is attempting to foil the jewel thieves, Bruce falls overboard, and Cynthia swims to his rescue with the jewels strapped to her back. They are rescued by a government patrol boat and taken back to New York where Cynthia and Bruce are married.

Financial troubles force Nell Carroll, a thoroughbred, to seek employment in a detective agency which has just taken up the trail of a very baffling jewelry robbery in an exclusive summer colony. In order to work from the inside, she is sent to the place as the Baroness Du Vassey. Suspicion promptly fastens upon Teddy De Veaux, the son of the woman who first invites Nell to her home. Every evidence points to him until the leader of the crooks, suspecting the real identity of the "baroness." decides to present himself as the Baron Du Vassey, her husband. The arrival of the "baron" causes consternation in the heart of Nell, who does not know whether she is facing an impostor or has chanced upon the name of a real nobleman. Trusting to chance to give her some hint as to the truth, she decides to face the man and attempt to outwit him. But more than wits are necessary to defeat the crook, with whom the butler is allied. It comes to a question of a steady hand and quick trigger finger when the thieves are caught red-handed and spring upon the innocent young Teddy.
