Biography

San Antonio, Texas, welcomed Bertram Bracken on New Year’s Day, 1880, and from that first breath he seemed destined to spin stories. Behind the camera he conjured shadows and light into dramas such as the bootlegger saga Defying the Law (1924), the tenement heartbreak Rose of the Bowery (1927), and the moody tragedy The Face on the Barroom Floor (1932). Off-set, two marriages—first to actress Margaret Landis, later to Mildred Bracken—shared the restless energy that powered his scripts. Sixty-plus desert summers after his Lone Star arrival, Bracken closed his final scene on 1 November 1952 in Cathedral City, California, leaving behind a flickering legacy etched in silver nitrate and Southwestern dust.
