Biography
"Joseph Louis DeGrasse, born May 4, 1873, in Bathurst, New Brunswick, emerged from a large French Canadian family, one of eleven children to Lange DeGrasse and Ellen Comeaux. He was the elder sibling to future actor Samuel DeGrasse. As a young child, around 1880, Joe embarked on a new chapter, immigrating to the United States. His initial professional path led him to journalism, but the magnetic pull of the theater soon diverted his course, transforming him into a stage actor. It was amidst this vibrant world that he met and married actress Ida May Park (1879-1954).\n\nBy 1910, the couple had transitioned to the burgeoning motion picture industry, performing in Burbank, California. While DeGrasse lent his acting talents to 13 films and contributed to two screenplays, his deepest interest lay in the art of directing. Ida, too, carved out a significant niche, becoming one of the few pioneering women directors of her time. Joseph's dedication to the directorial craft was further cemented in 1915 when he became a founding member of the Motion Picture Directors Association, a crucial precursor to the modern Director's Guild of America. Over a prolific career spanning from 1910 to 1935, he helmed an impressive 86 films, demonstrating his versatility as a writer and producer as well.\n\nJoseph DeGrasse passed away in Eagle Rock, California, on May 25, 1940. An intriguing thread of family lore suggests a distinguished connection between the DeGrasse brothers and the celebrated French Admiral and American Revolutionary War hero, François-Joseph Paul, marquis de Grasse Tilly, comte de Grasse, born September 13, 1722."
