Biography

"Moshe \"Mauritz\" Stiller, born in Helsinki, Finland, on July 17, 1883, emerged as a formidable director, writer, and actor whose vision profoundly shaped early cinema. His artistic journey commenced at the tender age of 16 within the vibrant world of theatre, where he proved remarkably prolific, embodying 87 roles between 1899 and 1916, and helming 16 stage productions from 1911 to 1928. A pivotal shift occurred in 1912 when Charles Magnusson of AB Svenska Biografteatern recognized Stiller's burgeoning talent, recruiting him alongside Viktor Sjöström (also a director, actor, and writer) into the nascent Swedish film industry as both director and actor. Stiller's cinematic debut was met with instant acclaim; his inaugural year alone saw him direct a remarkable six feature films. His masterpieces, \"Herr Arnes pengar\" (1919), \"Erotikon\" (1920), and \"Gösta Berlings saga\" (1923), stand as foundational pillars of Swedish film, each a testament to his innovative storytelling. It was within the epic scope of \"Gösta Berlings saga\" that an 18-year-old Greta Garbo delivered her first major performance, forging an indelible bond with Stiller that would define them as lifelong friends and creative allies. Stiller was instrumental in propelling Garbo to international stardom, first introducing her to German audiences in 1925. Their shared ambition then led them across the Atlantic in 1926, where they embarked on the production of \"The Temptress\" for Paramount and Irving Thalberg in the USA. Over his impactful career in film, Stiller directed 51 feature films and graced the screen as an actor in seven productions between 1912 and 1927. Tragically, his illustrious career was cut short. On November 8, 1928, at 1:05 am, Mauritz Stiller succumbed in Stockholm after a series of surgeries, his life extinguished by a lung abscess, leaving an irreplaceable void in the world of art."
