Biography

A midwinter baby, Raymond Longford arrived in Hawthorn, Victoria, on 23 September 1878, and spent the rest of his life turning light into stories. Behind the camera he steered audiences across storm-tossed decks in *The Mutiny of the Bounty* (1916), let streetwise romance bloom in *The Sentimental Bloke* (1919), and unravelled a man’s buried guilt in *Peter Vernon’s Silence* (1926). Off-screen, he shared his life with two wives—Emilie Elizabeth Anschutz and, later, Melena Louisa Keen. Longford’s final curtain fell in Sydney on 2 April 1959, but the images he crafted still flicker, keeping Australia’s early cinema alive.
