Biography
A winter’s day in 1877 Moscow brought Vladimir Rostislavovich Gardin into the world; by the time frost returned to the city each year, he was already rehearsing roles that would make him one of Russia’s first film pioneers. In 1915 alone he strode through the Napoleonic chaos of *War and Peace* and then traded epaulettes for rags in *Peterburgskiye trushchobi*, proving his range before the cameras had barely learned to turn. Nine years later he stepped behind them, coaxing silent-era poetry from the gloomy manor halls of *Landlord* (1924). Off-screen, his leading lady was Tatyana Bulakh, his wife and steadfast collaborator. Nearly nine decades after that January birth, on 29 May 1965, Gardin’s final curtain fell in Leningrad, the city now called St. Petersburg, leaving behind a legacy etched in nitrate and legend.
