All for the Movies: Universal City, California, the Wonder City of the World
Summary
A sprawling, celluloid odyssey across the Californian landscape, this 1913 documentary-style travelogue functions as both a topographical survey and a burgeoning industrial hagiography. The narrative arc traces a sun-drenched trajectory from the fog-shrouded, serpentine corridors of San Francisco—capturing the kinetic energy of its iconic trams and the looming, austere presence of Alcatraz—down through the primordial majesty of Yosemite’s granite cathedrals and the ancient, silent witness of the giant sequoias. The lens lingers on the 'Gold Rush' remnants, where history feels etched into the very timber of the small towns, before pivoting to the opulent, sprawling artifice of Hearst Castle. As the journey descends into the Southern Californian basin, the focus sharpens on the 'Wonder City of the World': Universal City. Here, the film transitions from naturalistic observation to a celebratory showcase of the nascent studio system, juxtaposing the leisure of Santa Monica’s bikini-clad shores and San Diego’s nostalgic Gaslamp Quarter with the frenetic, orchestrated labor of the film industry's capital. It is a visual manifesto of the 'California Dream' at its point of origin, blending the sublime beauty of Monterey and Lake Marina with the hyper-modern commercialism of early amusement parks like Disneyland and Sea World in their conceptual or early realized forms.
Synopsis
The state of California is located on the West Coast of the United States and is the land of huge palm trees, sandy beaches, girls in bikinis and sunshine; a paradise for surfers and the film industry. San Francisco is famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, the Alcatraz, its trams and the world's most winding street. Los Angeles is a huge metropolitan that is a collection of unique smaller villages; the capital of the film industry reaches from Santa Monica on the coast, through Malibu all the way to the elegant Beverly Hills. The main sight of San Diego is its harbour and the nostalgic Gaslamp Quarter. However, California is made up of more than just huge cities; it is also full of natural beauty, from the giant sequoias to the Yosemite National Park, the small towns that are reminiscent of the "gold rush"; the splendor of Hearst Castle and the famous amusement parks: Disneyland, Universal Studios and Sea World, San Diego. * San Francisco* Lake Marina * Groveland* Yosemite National Park* Monterey* Hearst Castle* Solvang* Los Angeles * Universal Studios * Santa Monica * Sea World * San Diego
