Summary
Judith Stafford—Manhattan’s porcelain idol draped in pearls and disdain—accepts the alabaster hand of Count Henri, a continental vulture who teaches her to sneer at her own homeland’s ‘savage’ rhythms. Her father, Tobias, a robber-baron with a conscience as weathered as his yacht’s teak, kidnaps his own daughter and maroons her on a palm-serrated atoll with Larry Saunders, a sun-scorched cowboy whose spurs still jingle with frontier democracy. For weeks the island is a crucible: monsoon skies whip Judith’s satin into rags, coral shreds her hauteur, and the cowboy’s quiet competence erodes the count’s toxic tutoring. Yet just as salt and sweat re-etch her character into something luminous, the count’s yacht—white as a surgeon’s scalpel—materializes on the horizon, ready to reclaim his ‘specimen’ and reset the social scalpel to her nerves.
Synopsis
Wealthy, spoiled society girl Judith Stafford accepts a marriage proposal from rich European Count Henri and adopts his arrogance and contempt for American "barbarians". This angers her father Tobias, who arranges for Judith and a cowboy friend of his, Larry Saunders, to be marooned on a South Sea island to teach her a lesson and break her spirit. At first the "test" has no effect on her, but she soon begins to warm to Larry--until her snobbish fiance' shows up.
