Dick Whittington and his Cat
Summary
A dew-beaded dawn in a thatched hamlet; Dick, all kneecaps and yearning, listens to a gaffer spin mirages of London—cobblestones allegedly inlaid with bullion, rooftops dripping sovereigns. The yarn detonates wanderlust; he decamps with nothing but a patched coat and a mouser whose whiskers twitch like divining rods. En route, charcoal forests give way to the sooty labyrinth of the capital where promises oxidise into rust. Guildhalls sneer, alchemists swindle, chimney sweeps barter gossip for crusts. Yet the cat—part talisman, part pickpocket—snags a plague of rats inside a merchant’s cellar, catapulting Dick into the mansion of a spice-king whose nutmeg perfumes the very air of privilege. Fortune pirouettes: a ship to Barbary, a corsair’s moonlit ambush, the feline’s hiss that scuppers mutiny, a cargo of saffron and silk that, once auctioned, buys stone wharves, almshouses, and finally the mayoral chain. Back in Cheapside, cobbles still glisten—but now with rain, not gold—while bells peal to Sir Richard Whittington, whose legend was never about the metal underfoot but the mettle within.
