Die Tänzerin Navarro
Summary
Carmencita Navarro, celebrated danseuse of Seville’s candle-lit tablaos, pirouettes into the suffocating embrace of Marcellus, a sugar-baron whose plantations bleed beyond the horizon; their union, brokered by church bells and the rustle of banknotes, soon collapses into a danse macabre when a nocturnal card-game ends with a silver-handled cane buried in the planter’s throat. Widowhood flings the scarlet-laced dancer into the murk of espionage—she trades castanets for cipher-keys, smuggling naval plans beneath her ruffled skirt—yet a single misstep lands her before a stone-faced firing squad at dawn. In the bruised moment before bullets kiss flesh, a veiled double-agent swears she is innocent; rifles lower, smoke clears, and Carmencita walks away with the dawn mist curling round her ankles like remorse.
