In the decaying heart of Weimar-era Berlin, Auguste (Asta Nielsen), an aging sex worker, finds herself caught in the gravitational pull of a desperate fantasy. When she encounters a young, middle-class man who has drifted into the city's underbelly, she doesn't just see a lover; she sees a late-stage escape from the street. She pours her life's savings into a frantic bid for domestic respectability, attempting to scrub away years of hardship with the promise of a bourgeois life. However, the arrival of a younger, more vibrant woman shatters this fragile illusion. The film is a brutal examination of class rigidity and the biological expiration date society imposes on women, culminating in a violent collision between hope and the reality of the pavement.
