Summary

A once-lauded intellectual, cruelly stripped of his identity and intellectual property by a rapacious count, descends into the anonymous, self-flagellating existence of a circus clown. Renouncing his former self, he embraces the stage name 'He Who Gets Slapped,' finding a perverse solace in public humiliation as atonement for his past naiveté. His carefully constructed anonymity, however, shatters with the arrival of the ethereal bareback rider, Consuelo, a young woman whose innocent vulnerability ignites a protective, almost paternal, love within him. This fragile new world collapses when his old betrayer, the very count who ruined him, reappears, now preying upon Consuelo.
