Summary
In the arid expanse of Yucca County, Sheriff Tom Merrit, a steadfast guardian of frontier law, finds his routine pursuit of the notorious Butch Barlow gang irrevocably altered by the grim discovery of a cadaver nestled within a copse of trees. This macabre find compels him to seek Dr. Wills for an inquest, a duty intertwined with his burgeoning affections for the doctor's daughter, Hilda. Their tender conversation is abruptly shattered by news of a brazen bank robbery, impelling Tom into immediate action. With Hilda, a spirited and resourceful companion, by his side, they embark on a perilous chase in his automobile. The outlaws, however, employ a novel and treacherous tactic: a noxious gas attack that disables their vehicle, leaving them stranded but miraculously unharmed. As they navigate the desolate terrain on foot, fate guides them to the bandits' clandestine encampment. Demonstrating remarkable courage and initiative, Hilda seizes a bandit's horse, undertaking a desperate ride back to town for assistance. Her timely return with a posse thwarts Tom's imminent demise, as he teeters on the precipice of being lynched by the very gang he pursued.
