Mysteriet paa Duncan Slot
Summary
A granite stronghold on the Jutland seabed, Duncan Castle exhales briny rot; within its salt-peeled corridors a contagion of thought slithers, turning barons into sleep-deprived somnambulists and housemaids into oracles of dread. The young folklorist Agnete von Prangen arrives clutching a valise of runic notes, only to watch rationalism disintegrate as candle flames bow toward invisible vortices and ancestral portraits perspire tar. Valdemar Møller’s taciturn steward stalks the parapets convinced the family bloodline is a rope fraying under the weight of a nameless creditor; Ellen Rassow’s consumptive chatelaine hears lullabies in the chimney, while Johannes Ring’s invalid cousin sketches spirals that map the castle’s collapsing metaphysics. Night by night the residents’ dreams are harvested by a pallid presence—part landlord, part ledger-keeper of sins—who trades insomnia for memories, leaving victims glossy-eyed and hollow as wax reliquaries. When the winter tide traps the household like specimens under glass, Agnete exhumes a suppressed saga: a 16th-century alchemist-king pledged the castle itself as collateral against knowledge, and the mortgage has come due across centuries. The reckoning unfolds in a ballroom without music: shadows couple with bodies, mirrors forget faces, and language turns to mercury. Some flee across floes that crunch like chandeliers; others stay to be inscribed into the masonry, their heartbeats synchronized with the lung of the keep. Dawn finds a silence thicker than stone: the castle stands, but its interior is now a negative space, a mold of everything human that has been poured out.
