Summary
In the nascent days of the 20th century, within the confines of a seemingly ordinary domestic sphere, Henry, a man recently inducted into the venerable mysteries of a local Masonic Lodge, finds his newfound fraternal allegiances challenged by the insistent curiosity of his wife, Polly. Barely days into his initiation, Polly, invoking the sacred marital vow of unreserved candor, demands full disclosure of the Lodge's hallowed rites and clandestine terminology. Despite Henry's earnest protestations regarding the inviolable sanctity of his oath, Polly's relentless persuasion erodes his resolve. Succumbing to her unwavering pressure, he divulges the Lodge's secret word and meticulously re-enacts the esoteric initiation ritual, complete with the allegorical 'riding of the mythical goat' and the solemn, symbolic gestures that demarcate the brotherhood. He extracts from her a solemn promise of absolute secrecy, a vow Polly, with characteristic human fallibility, promptly shatters. The intimate revelations, intended solely for her ears, swiftly become the subject of widespread village amusement, transforming Henry's sacred experiences into a public jest. Confronted by the Lodge, Henry is granted a precarious reprieve: his membership is contingent upon Polly's public declaration that his entire confession was nothing more than a playful fabrication, thus restoring the Lodge's mystique and Henry's precarious standing within its ranks.
Synopsis
Some days after her husband's initiation into a Masonic Lodge, his wife demands to know the secrets of the great fraternal organization. Henry tells her that he is not privileged to reveal these secrets, but Polly insists that he promised never to keep any secrets from her. Finally, he confides to her the secret word of his Lodge. And so he gives away the initiation rites to Polly - his riding of the mythical goat, the solemn initiation with its mystic signs, etc. He swears her to secrecy but she naturally tells her neighbor all about the Masons so that the entire town is laughing at his holy revelations. On his return from the lodge meeting, Henry tells her that he is permitted to remain in the organization on condition that she pretends that the secrets he had revealed to her were all a joke.
