Summary
Prince Stepan Kasatsky, a man of incandescent pride and unyielding aristocratic rigor, finds his world-view catastrophically dismantled upon discovering his fiancée's previous liaison with the Tsar. This betrayal serves as the catalyst for a radical metamorphosis, driving the young officer to abandon the opulence of the imperial court for the stark, silent corridors of the Orthodox Church. Reborn as Father Sergius, Kasatsky attempts to conquer his ego through monastic isolation and rigorous asceticism. However, the film meticulously charts the paradox of his sanctity: his very reputation for holiness becomes a new source of the pride he sought to extinguish. As he retreats further into the wilderness, he is pursued by the specters of carnal temptation and the suffocating adoration of the masses. The narrative culminates in a harrowing psychological collapse, where the boundary between the saint and the sinner dissolves, forcing Sergius into a final, anonymous pilgrimage toward a grace that exists beyond the confines of institutional religion.
