Summary
Set against the biting, crystalline frost of 1838, the narrative unfurls within the somber, echoing corridors of the Rautakylä manor, where the venerable Baron Magnus Drakenhjelm resides as a relic of a bygone epoch. The arrival of unexpected visitors serves as a catalyst for a profound temporal rupture, plunging the spectator back five decades into the opulent yet treacherous court of King Gustav III in Stockholm. This cinematic tapestry, woven from the literary threads of Sakari Topelius, navigates the labyrinthine psyche of an aristocrat haunted by the specters of his youth. It is a meticulous exploration of historical continuity and personal redemption, where the starkness of the Finnish winter contrasts sharply with the decadent, candlelit intrigues of the Swedish Enlightenment. The film functions as both a ghost story and a socio-political autopsy, dissecting the transition from absolute monarchy to the burgeoning modern identity of the North through the lens of one man's crumbling legacy.
