Summary
Emerging from the arbitrary indignity of a military discharge—a consequence, bizarrely, of a bean shortage within the 372nd infantry—the eponymous Smithy finds himself adrift in the civilian realm, a world ill-equipped for his particular brand of well-intentioned chaos. His quest for gainful employment leads him to a bustling construction site, a crucible of industry where the foundational elements of a new dwelling are taking shape. Here, Smithy, with an almost preternatural knack for unintended deconstruction, swiftly transforms an ordered environment into an arena of escalating pandemonium, his efforts to assist invariably culminating in structural compromises and the exasperation of his fellow laborers. A crucial administrative blunder then sets the stage for the film's central comedic conceit: the construction company owner, departing for a week, dispatches instructions for the completion of the house to a 'Mr. Smith.' Through a twist of fate, this missive falls into Smithy’s hands. With an earnest, if misguided, zeal, he single-handedly, and miraculously, brings the house to a state of ostensible completion. Upon the owner's return, Smithy is lauded for his astonishing efficiency, a brief moment of triumph that dissipates into catastrophic spectacle as the removal of the final, crucial support beam reveals the precarious, and utterly ludicrous, architectural integrity of his creation.
