Summary
William McCabe, a man whose heart has been fractured by his wife's betrayal, drifts along a bleak waterfront, his thoughts darkened by the prospect of ending his own life. In a sudden twist of fate, he intervenes to rescue Shark Moran from drowning, an act that forges an unlikely camaraderie. Grateful, Moran offers McCabe employment aboard his solitary lightship, a floating sanctuary where the relentless sea mirrors the protagonist's inner turbulence. Within this isolation, McCabe encounters Ann Reynolds, the luminous daughter of the supply‑ship captain, and a tender affection blossoms, promising redemption. The fragile equilibrium shatters when Moran, during a ferocious storm, saves a woman and pursues her with unrestrained ardor. The revelation that the rescued woman is none other than McCabe's estranged wife, Helda, ignites a violent confrontation between the two men. Yet the bond of friendship endures; Moran repents, and Helda ultimately declares that William is free to marry Ann, sealing a narrative of forgiveness, renewal, and the inexorable pull of the sea.
