The Burglar and the Lady
Summary
In gas-lit corridors where velvet shadows cling like guilty memories, a suave cracksman—equal parts Sherlock and satyr—parades as a consulting sleuth while moonlighting as society’s most elusive pilferer. Beneath the shimmer of chandeliers, he lifts jewels and reputations with the same laconic grace, his smile a gilded scalpel. A prim heiress—her innocence armored in impudence—retains him to trace a vanished diadem, unaware that the blood-warm diamonds already glint in his waistcoat pocket. Their courtship of waltzes and wire-cutters coils through rooftop chases, séance parlors, and a boxing club where Corbett’s fists hammer out moral arithmetic. When the burglar’s mirrored identities finally shatter, the woman he meant to ruin becomes the only alibi that can either acquit or condemn him.
Synopsis
A gentleman burglar is a detective, which acts as a shield to his more shady pastime.
