The Colleen Bawn
Summary
Hardscrabble cliffs batter the Atlantic along County Clare; in their shadow, a whitewashed cottage trembles under the weight of an ancestral debt. Young Hardress Cregan—last scion of a once-grand lineage—returns from Trinity College with polished boots, a crumbling title deed, and a mother who speaks of mortgages the way sailors speak of drowning. Salvation arrives draped in lace and arrogance: the wealthy Miss Anne Chute, whose dowry could resurrect crumbling stone walls, yet whose gaze already treats marriage as ledger ink. Hardress, half-bewitched by duty and half-allergic to her perfume, rides by moonlight to the reed-fringed margins of the River Shannon where Eily O’Connor—nicknamed the Colleen Bawn, the fair-haired girl—tunes her fiddle with salt-stung fingers and sings ballads older than the land itself. Between river mist and midsummer faerie-lights, the mismatched lovers exchange clandestine vows, a tarnished ring, and breathless promises that taste of peat smoke.
