Summary
Hal Locke, a prodigiously reckless motorist, is thrust into a desperate crusade when his father's once-thriving enterprise teeters on the brink of ruin. The scheming Wall Street broker Richard Brownlee, exploiting a legal loophole, plots to wrest the family firm from its rightful heirs. In a feverish bid to outpace the clock, Hal vows to traverse the continent—racing from the fog‑shrouded streets of San Francisco across the arid spine of Nevada, the thunderous plains of the Midwest, and the unforgiving snows of the Appalachians—until he reaches the bustling avenues of New York City. His mission: to hand over a crucial check before the deadline expires, thereby nullifying Brownlee's machinations and preserving the Locke legacy. The odyssey is a kaleidoscope of perilous mountain passes, sabotaged fuel lines, and relentless pursuit by Brownlee's hired henchmen, each obstacle testing Hal's mettle, ingenuity, and unyielding devotion to family. The narrative crescendos as Hal, bruised but unbroken, delivers the salvation inked on paper, thwarting the broker's avarice and restoring the family's honor.
