Summary
Amidst the gilded cages of privilege, collegiate idealist Eleanor Vance (Corinne Barker) becomes the unwitting cynosure when deceased industrialist Silas Thorne (Frank Morgan) spitefully bequeaths his entire fortune to her—solely because she rebuffed his lecherous advances. Branded a gold-digging harlot by society's merciless gossip mills, Eleanor retreats to a remote Vermont hamlet, seeking anonymity in its snow-locked isolation. There, she crosses paths with Silas's estranged son William (Robert Cummings), a disillusioned architect shouldering paternal wounds, who mistakes Eleanor for another avaricious social climber. Their frosty coexistence thaws into an electric, distrustful intimacy as blizzards rage outside and buried truths emerge—about Silas's psychological torment, William's artistic suffocation, and the venomous inheritance now poisoning Eleanor's soul. Their fragile connection culminates in a candlelit confession where William realizes the bequest was never about wealth, but a dying man's twisted testament to the one woman who denied his corruption.
