Summary
Amid the ochre immensity of a frontier that seems to sweat cordite, a lone Texas Ranger dissolves his badge into the dust, trading the starched insignia of the law for the frayed anonymity of a drifter. His quarry: a hydra of illicit rifle-smugglers whose tentacles twist from the Gulf Coast wharves to the mesquite badlands. Adopting the laconic hush of a wanted man, he collars a swaggering lieutenant, filches the outlaw’s scuffed bona fides, and slips inside the gang’s roiling campfire confederacy—an underworld of sweat-stained Stetsons and nickel-plated deceit. Betrayal arrives like a rattler’s sudden whir: his true name is peeled back, the iron circle closes, and the Ranger, now bound and bait, stares down a shallow grave. Only the thunder of hooves—an avenging posse spurred by a steadfast frontier woman—shatters the dawn, reversing the noose into deliverance.
