A tempestuous narrative unfurls around Peggy Mason, a coffee shop co-proprietor whose burgeoning affection for the affluent Douglas Wyman soon collides with the inconvenient revelation of his marital bonds. A precipitous departure from a secluded lodge, triggered by this unsettling truth, plunges Peggy into a literal storm, from which an erstwhile admirer emerges as her rescuer. The subsequent discovery of Douglas’s wife’s murder ignites a legal conflagration, with Douglas ensnared by circumstance and his steadfast refusal to compromise Peggy’s reputation by disclosing their shared alibi. As the scales of justice teeter precariously, Peggy’s eleventh-hour arrival at the courthouse, coinciding with the imminent pronouncement of a guilty verdict, is dramatically preempted by a last-minute confession. Douglas’s exoneration, however, does not immediately pave the way for their union, as Peggy, in a twist of fate, is already betrothed. Only through the magnanimity of her fiancé, who perceives the undeniable pull between Peggy and Douglas, is the path cleared for a poignant reconciliation and a long-deferred embrace.
Peggy Mason, part owner of a coffee shop, falls in love with wealthy Douglas Wyman. On a driving trip, they stop at a lodge in the hills, and Peggy learns that Douglas is unhappily married. Peggy immediately leaves the lodge but is caught in a storm, from which she is rescued by an old suitor. Douglas' wife is found murdered, and when he will not establish an alibi for fear of ruining Peggy's reputation, he is arrested and tried for the crime. Peggy learns of the trial at the last minute and hurries to the courtroom, arriving just as the judge is about to open the envelope with the jury's guilty verdict. At the same time, a confession by the murderer is produced. The case against Douglas is dismissed. Douglas then asks Peggy to marry him, but Peggy has become engaged to her old suitor and therefore refuses. The suitor, however, realizes that Peggy loves Douglas and releases her from the engagement; Peggy turns to Douglas and they embrace.
