Summary
In the bustling aisles of a downtown department store, Sarah Juke, a modest clerk with a quiet dignity, catches the eye of Jimmie Fitzgibbons, a suave song plugger whose charm is as polished as his silk shoes. Their flirtation teeters on the brink of scandal, yet Sarah’s heart remains tethered to Harry Smith, a laborer of gentle temperament. Their romance culminates in marriage, but the honeymoon is swiftly eclipsed when Harry contracts tuberculosis, a disease that gnaws at his lungs and his future. Compelled by duty, Sarah returns to the mercantile grind, while a physician urges a relocation to a temperate clime, a suggestion that falls on deaf ears of the indifferent aid society. Jimmie, now a thriving composer, resurfaces with the intent to lure Sarah away, but his schemes crumble when he loses a $300 wager to her and is rebuffed at the altar of intimacy. Claiming the winnings as earnings from a brief stint as a dancer, Sarah secures the funds needed to ferry Harry to the sun‑kissed shores of California, where she soon follows with their newborn, sealing a narrative of sacrifice, resilience, and the inexorable pull of love against the tides of hardship.
