Biography
George Cooper, 51, who spent 37 of those years in front of a camera, slipped away on December 9 at the Veterans Hospital in Sawtelle, California, closing a three-year battle with illness. He first stepped onto a Newark stage, then hustled through New York stock companies before Vitagraph beckoned in 1908; a stint in Mack Sennett’s slapstick whirl soon followed. Silents made him a familiar face, and when talkies arrived he simply lowered his voice, switched to character parts and kept working. Off-screen he answered to George Cooper Healey. He leaves behind a wife, two sons and two daughters.
