Summary
A boisterous comedic caper unfurls as two unscrupulous political operatives, McQuire and Olson, abruptly decamp from the urban labyrinth of New York, their hasty retreat necessitated by the discovery of their audacious election frauds. Their flight marks the genesis of a relentless pursuit by the astute female detective, Ruby Swift, whose determined tracking forms a compelling counter-narrative to their rogue escapades. Evading Swift with a series of cunning maneuvers, the duo procures an antiquated automobile, steering their course towards the seemingly tranquil, unsuspecting rural enclave of Hicktown. They arrive serendipitously on the eve of the community’s annual mayoral election, a stage ripe for their particular brand of metropolitan political chicanery. Swift, ever on their heels, materializes just as McQuire and Olson unleash their sophisticated, albeit corrupt, stratagems to hijack the local democratic process. They astutely co-opt the burgeoning suffrage movement as their platform, an ironic twist given their own disregard for electoral integrity, and effortlessly dismantle the entrenched, anachronistic reign of Mayor Franklin Bond, whose rigid conservatism has rendered him profoundly vulnerable to their novel, albeit illicit, tactics. Ruby, a master of disguise, infiltrates their operation under the guise of an adventurous co-conspirator, enlisted by the politicians to assist in their scheme to 'trim' the town. She witnesses their audacious theft of the ballot boxes and their subsequent victory, yet remains unaware of the ballots' clandestine hiding place. Concurrently, a romantic subplot weaves through the political machinations: the incumbent mayor's daughter, smitten with her father's youthful opponent, persuades him to withdraw, seemingly clearing the path for her father's effortless re-election. However, the theft of the ballot boxes precipitates a dramatic turn, as a rival suitor for the daughter’s affections cunningly frames the withdrawn candidate, leading to his unjust incarceration. Ruby, ingeniously positioned as the politicians’ secretary, orchestrates a calculated romantic entanglement, captivating both McQuire and Olson with her charm. Her objective is clear: to ignite a jealous rivalry between them, hoping their discord will expose the location of the pilfered ballots. As predicted, jealousy consumes the duo, leading to a bitter quarrel that even the local suffragette Chief of Police proves incapable of mediating. The film culminates in Ruby’s ingenious exploitation of their fractured alliance, masterfully manipulating their animosity to unravel their scheme and ultimately bring them to the long-overdue scales of justice in a thrilling five-reel comedic climax.
Fleeing from New York after election frauds McQuire and Olson, strong-arm politicians, are pursued by female detective Ruby Swift. The politicians elude her, purchase an ancient automobile, and arrive in the rural community of Hicktown just in time for the yearly mayoralty election. Ruby trails them and is on the scene when they put their big-city political knowledge to use in stealing the election. The politicians adopt suffrage as their party and defeat one Franklin Bond, the crusty mayor who has become so hard shelled in his small bailiwick that his defeat is easy at their hands. Ruby poses as an adventuress, is enlisted by the politicians to help them "trim" the town and is present when they steal the ballot boxes and win the election, but does not know where they have hidden the ballots. The daughter of the mayor loves the candidate opposing her father and gets him to withdraw, leaving her father a supposedly-easy field. Later when the ballot boxes are stolen, a rival suitor for the mayor's daughter puts the blame on the young candidate who has withdrawn, and he is sent to jail. Ruby, as secretary to the politicians, causes both to fall in love with her, hoping their rivalry will part them and reveal the hidden ballot boxes. Jealous over Ruby, the politicians quarrel, and not even the suffragette Chief of Police can reconcile them. How Ruby takes advantage of the quarrel and brings them to justice is the climax of this five-reel comedy.
