Diana, tending his torn shoulder, discovers the scar maps neatly onto her own unspoken fears of matrimonial suffocation back home; the pair, once predator and prey, now orbit each other like twin suns over a scorched planet. Their clinch is interrupted by a sandstorm that buries the screen in ochre static, emerging to show her astride a thoroughbred, rifle across her lap, leading a rescue party she never asked to need. In the final reel she stands at the gangway of a steamer bound for Marseille, passport in gloved hand, only to turn back toward the dunes where Valentino waits in jodhpurs—no longer captor nor captive, but equal conspirators against the cartographies of empire.
