Biography

A desert son first drew breath on 15 November 1880 when Charles Brinley entered the world in Yuma, Arizona. Two decades later he was trading the dusty frontier for flickering klieg lights, carving out a screen career that spanned silent shorts and early epics. Audiences remember his weather-beaten authority in At Shiloh (1913), his seafaring grit in Moran of the Lady Letty (1922), and his coonskin swagger in In the Days of Daniel Boone (1923). Off-camera he shared his life with Johanna, the woman whose surname remains a mystery to history. The final curtain fell on 17 February 1946 in Los Angeles, California, closing the reel on a man who had journeyed from Arizona Territory to the birth of Hollywood.
